Symptoms range in severity from mild to severe. With some oral health diseases, you may not have any symptoms. Routine dental visits with a specialist are the best way to detect these and other oral health issues to avoid complications.

What are the risk factors for oral health diseases?

Anyone can develop diseases of soft or hard tissue in your mouth, but certain factors boost your risk of experiencing them. Examples include genetics, poor oral hygiene, smoking, and unprotected oral sexual activity. Oftentimes, the cause of an oral health disease isn’t known.

How does my provider diagnose oral health problems?

To diagnose oral health diseases and develop a treatment plan when needed, Dr. Sedghizadeh discusses your oral health history and symptoms. He evaluates your teeth, gums, mouth, and lips, and may take dental x-rays / CBCT.

Dr. Sedghizadeh might take a hard or soft tissue biopsy to screen for cancer and other diseases requiring treatment.

What are common treatments for oral health issues?

Depending on the type and severity of oral health disease you have, Dr. Sedghizadeh may recommend one or more of the following:

Home remedies- Things you can do at home to improve some oral health diseases include brushing your teeth at least twice daily using fluoride toothpaste, flossing every day, and using antiseptic mouth rinse if your provider recommends it.

Medications- Oral medicines, topical medications, mouth rinses, injections, and other medications can reduce unpleasant symptoms or get rid of some oral health problems.

Dental surgery- If you have mouth cancer or other conditions requiring specialized procedures, the Oral Medicine & Pathology Center team offers dental surgery to treat your condition and reduce the risk of complications.
